Urimai Kural Trust advances dignity, equality, and justice for LGBTQIA+ communities, children, youth, women, and persons with disabilities. Every person deserves safety, healthcare, opportunity, and the freedom to live authentically.
A Safe Space to Live, Love, and Rebuild
For many people assigned female at birth (AFAB) who grow into identities beyond womanhood — including trans men, non-binary and gender-diverse individuals — the journey of self-realisation often comes with difficult consequences. Coming out can trigger surveillance, coercion, emotional abuse, and pressure to conform to rigid expectations around gender, marriage, and family life.
When these individuals are also in relationships — particularly with partners who were assigned female at birth — the risks multiply. Families and communities frequently respond with hostility, forcing couples to choose between safety and staying together. For many, leaving home becomes the only option.
Our shelter exists to ensure that no one has to make that choice.
Across many support systems, the experiences of transmasculine and AFAB gender-diverse communities often remain invisible. Even within queer spaces, the specific challenges faced by people assigned female at birth who do not identify as women are frequently overlooked. This shelter was created to fill that gap.
It provides a discreet and secure living environment for transmasculine individuals and their partners — a place where residents can find stability, care, and the freedom to live authentically without fear.
Residents are supported with a holistic approach that prioritises safety, dignity, and autonomy. The shelter offers:
Residents can stay for an extended period — up to one year — allowing them time to stabilise their lives, explore opportunities, and build supportive networks.
Not every transmasculine person chooses medical or legal transition, and each individual’s journey is different. Our approach respects these differences and places the resident’s choices at the centre of all support services.
Safety is combined with agency: residents are never prevented from reconnecting with their families if they choose to do so. Support here is about expanding options, not restricting them.
Given the risks faced by many residents, confidentiality is essential. The shelter’s location remains undisclosed and strict safety protocols are followed to protect the privacy and security of those who stay here. Our goal is to ensure that every resident can live free from threats, surveillance, or forced separation from their loved ones.
Our goal is to ensure that every resident can live free from threats, surveillance, or forced separation from their loved ones.
This shelter is more than a temporary home — it is a step toward a society where transmasculine people and their partners can live openly, safely, and with dignity. By building supportive spaces and communities, we aim to create pathways toward independence, wellbeing, and belonging.

On 28 February 2026, Urimai Kural Trust proudly organised Tamil Nadu’s first kabaddi tournament exclusively for trans men, marking a landmark moment for visibility, empowerment, and inclusion. The event brought together players from across the state for a day of competition, solidarity, and celebration of identity, setting a precedent for inclusive sports in the region.
Hosted at the grounds of Queen Mary's College, the tournament offered a dedicated platform where transmasc persons could compete, connect, and be recognised. This initiative reflects Urimai Kural Trust’s unwavering commitment to creating safe, empowering spaces and amplifying the voices and experiences of transmasc communities.
Trans men and other gender-diverse individuals assigned female at birth often experience being a “minority within minorities.” Public discourse on transgender rights frequently focuses on trans women, leaving transmasc persons overlooked in policies, welfare programmes, and social support systems.
This exclusion is particularly visible in sports. Strict gender divisions often prevent transmasc athletes from participating openly in men’s or women’s categories. The Trans Men’s Kabaddi Tournament shattered this barrier, asserting a simple but powerful truth: Trans men have the right to play.
The tournament brought together 32 trans men from across Tamil Nadu, organised into four teams of eight players each. Many had never played kabaddi in a formal setting, making the event both exciting and meaningful.
Months of preparation by Urimai Kural Trust ensured the tournament was inclusive and professional:
The tournament was graced by distinguished guests who lent their support and vision for inclusive sports:
To recognise talent, effort, and participation, cash prizes were awarded to all teams:
| Placement | Prize Details |
|---|---|
| 1st Place | ₹14,000 (Shared by Team) |
| 2nd Place | ₹1,312 per participant |
| 3rd Place | ₹875 per participant |
| 4th Place | ₹656 per participant |
The event became a space where players could see themselves reflected in others, feel a sense of belonging, and embrace their identities with pride. It created opportunities to connect and share experiences, countering the isolation many transmasc persons face.
The tournament stands as a powerful example of how community-led initiatives can create visibility and meaningful opportunities. We advocate for a future where transmasc athletes are welcomed across all sports arenas without discrimination.
